Traditional fruit seller and scales in Pakistan

When was the last time you saw a man weighing your fruit like this? If you look closely at the photograph you can see the weights for the scales and even a fruit knife. Moreover the leaves are all there for effect too.

With the recent atrocities being committed in and around Peshawar I wanted to show something of real everyday life there for the majority of people.

The story behind this photograph

This photograph was taken in Peshawar Pakistan. My favourite city in Pakistan. It’s a case of being there at the right time. During emergency rule in 2007 to be precise. That said Peshawar is unlike any other city on earth. And has been like that for centuries.

It’s a frontier city facing both Afghanistan and the North West Frontier in Pakistan. It’s a place where anything goes. Bandits, gun runners and drug barons mingle with metal merchants, farmers and traders.

This man was fruit vendor in the middle of all this on a busy street. He made a show of his produce and everyone bought from him. Lemons, pomegranates and apples.

The key to all this was the show he put on whenever someone bought something. His arm up high. The metal scales hanging from his fingers. His call to tell the customer the price.

You just don’t get that kind of service with an electronic scales at a checkout!
