Hotel Nepalaya is located in a small cobblestone street off Thamel Marg in a south central part of Kathmandu’s busy (Thamel) area that’s chock-a-block full of restaurants and attractions. Thankfully the hotel is one of the few in Kathmandu that offers quiet rooms!
Recently renovated the hotel offers forty rooms with several categories to choose from. Each one offering a significant notch up from the last. The only issue for some is the lack of windows. However it’s cramped Thamel so all that’s available is a brick wall outside!
Inside the hotel there’s a lovely Newari brick reception waiting to greet you along with a spacious white marble seating area. There’s an elevator along with a back-up generator to your rooms and a nice restaurant on a quiet rooftop.
The Newari painting and sculptures adds wonderfully to the hotels modern exterior. Best of all the hotel is very much away from all the noise of Thamel. You’ll sleep well here.
Rooms & staff
The rooms are very spacious, with rugs covering marble flooring and lovely Newari paintings on the wall. It’s clear someone has taken the time in wanting to make your stay here an enjoyable one.
The bathrooms are large and clean with no shortage of hot water
All rooms come with satellite TV, a DVD player, walk-in closet and free Wi-Fi.
I found the staff very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. There’s no hard push on tours and you are free to ask questions about going places in Nepal.
Summary
Hotel Nepalaya is one of those rare finds in Kathmandu offering a secluded quiet hotel while still being in the center of Thamel. The rooms are lovely and the whole hotel is maintained well.
Add to this some excellent staff, welcoming hospitality and prices that outmatched the competition Hotel Nepalaya is indeed a rare find worth checking out.
