Mayadevi temple, or more commonly Lumbini temple, is built over the site of another temple that marks the spot where Lord Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, was born. Today inside the temple there are excavation works you can visit. These included a marker showing the very spot that Mayadevi, Buddha's mother, gave birth.
In front of the temple is the Mayadevi pond or Puskarni. It is said that Mayadevi bathed here before giving birth. To the right of the temple in the above photograph of Lumbini temple is the Ashokan Pillar.
