About Hotels in Chiang Mai's old city

Ku Huang corner of the old city wall in Chiang Mai Thailand

Staying inside the old city walls of Chiang Mai is definitely the best option for anyone visiting the region!

Chiang Mai's old city is probably the top reason to visit and stay in the area.

Filled with temples, monasteries, day tours, activities, restaurants, bars, cafes and accommodation that suits all budgets it's a virtual travelers paradise.

The old city is surrounded by parts of an ancient protective wall measuring 1.8 kilometers on the north and south sides and two kilometers on the east and west sides. Thusly Chiang Mai's old city is also very walkable making a great place to stay nearby.

While there are hotels and guest houses all over Chiang Mai it's highly advisable to stay near the old city to make the most out of your time and be near the cultural highlights and recreation activities in this former ancient royal capital.

In 2018 many budget hotels were forced to close in Chiang Mai due to licensing issues. Do double check your bookings!

Did you know?

There are plenty of hotels outside Chiang Mai's old city. However, the old city is quite beautiful and the central hub to see and do things. There's also very little price difference in staying near the old wall or 1km outside it!

In 2018 many budget hotels were forced to close or up their prices due to the enforcement of tax laws. This was made even more difficult due to the Pandemic 2020-2022. Post pandemic, prices have increased as people return.
