Spring can hang on a little longer but most likely heavy monsoon weather will be moving in though not with very heavy showers. It does however start to get humid at this time of year with plenty of thunderstorms.

If your trek runs from April into May then you'll need to bring rain gear and be prepared for heavy down pours..

For the most part at 2,000m expect day time temperatures of 25+ degrees and temperatures at night around 9 degrees.

May trekking tips

  • Bring a light rain jacket and backpack rain cover
  • Try to leave earlier in May rather than later
  • Dress in Layers

What is the weather like in May for trekking in Nepal?

May in Nepal sees the continuation of warming temperatures as the country transitions further into the pre-monsoon season. The heat builds steadily, and humidity begins to rise noticeably. Trekkers can anticipate daytime temperatures in the mountains reaching 25+ degrees Celsius, creating warm and increasingly humid conditions. Nights remain relatively pleasant, with temperatures typically ranging from 8 to 12 degrees Celsius, offering a welcome respite from the daytime heat. However, the humidity often persists, making for a consistently warm and sometimes muggy atmosphere. May also experiences a greater frequency of hail showers, thunderstorms, and rain. These pre-monsoon showers can be localized but are becoming more common as the month progresses, hinting at the approaching monsoon.

May offers a unique window for trekking in Nepal. The trails are generally less crowded than during the peak seasons, and the landscapes are vibrant and green. However, the rising heat and humidity present their own set of challenges. It's essential to stay well-hydrated and to choose trekking routes that are appropriate for the conditions.

Higher altitude treks can offer a more comfortable experience with cooler temperatures. While widespread, heavy rainfall is less frequent in May compared to the core monsoon months, it's still advisable to pack rain gear as the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms increases. Being mindful of potential weather changes and planning accordingly is key to a safe and enjoyable trek in Nepal during May.

* weather temperatures and conditions change as you go up in altitude or descend. Likewise there are variations depending on the trek. Always expect passes and base camps to have more extreme conditions. The temperatures listed here are only used as rough indications.

Historical weather data for trekking in May

Since publishing my guidebooks we've been keeping an accurate record of both GPS data for trails and the weather to try and help trekkers make decisions.

The following information is correlated based on real trekking guides and trekkers who were in the following areas. The weather data is broken down into the year of the trek, weeks in the month and a note on what a guide or person experienced in terms of weather. We've used EBC, ABC and the APC for weather examples as they cover the widest range of areas.

EBC = Everest Base Camp. ABC = Annapurna Base Camp. APC = Annapurna Circuit.

* Blank years or months just means the guide or data is/was not available. It may also mean we've not had the time to update the data here (we have a lot of data on all treks). We are trying to keep this information as accurate as possible. If you are looking for specific data you may contact us, however you can best support this site by purchasing a guidebook first.

What trekking clothing is needed during May in Nepal?

Trekking in Nepal during May calls for a versatile approach to clothing, designed to handle the warming temperatures, increasing humidity, and occasional rain. Breathable rain gear is a must-have, including a reliable rain jacket and trousers to protect against potential showers. Sturdy trekking boots are recommended, not only for the varied terrain but also for navigating any muddy trails resulting from rain.

Lightweight and quick-drying clothing is ideal for the warm and humid conditions. Trekking shirts, shorts, and pants made from moisture-wicking fabrics will help you stay comfortable during the day. A light fleece or similar layer can be useful for cooler evenings or if you gain altitude. Given the mix of sunny, wet, and hot days, dressing in layers allows you to adapt quickly to changing conditions. A light sleeping bag or a sleeping bag liner can be a comfortable addition for the evenings.

Is trekking accommodation on the trails open during May in Nepal?

All trekking accommodation along the established routes will be open in May. Teahouses and lodges welcome trekkers throughout the pre-monsoon season. While May is generally less busy than the peak seasons, it can still be a good idea to check with local sources or your trekking agency about availability, especially if you're trekking in less popular areas or during any local holidays. Booking ahead is generally not essential in most areas, but it can provide peace of mind.

Are trekking restaurants on the trails open during May in Nepal?

Similar to accommodation, all restaurants and teahouses along the trekking trails will be open in May. They cater to trekkers throughout the pre-monsoon season. While food is generally available, it's always a good idea to be mindful of local customs. It's customary for trekkers staying at a teahouse to also dine there. This is an important aspect of teahouse culture.

Be sure to confirm their policy on outside food and drinks to avoid any misunderstandings.
